Hair Color Services in Sacramento

Start with the color result you want.

You do not need to know salon terminology before you call. Tell May or Tammy what you want your hair to look like. Your starting color, previous treatments, condition and desired maintenance all help determine the right service.

01

Hair Color: Change or Refresh Your Shade

Hair color changes or refreshes the shade you see. The plan depends on how light or dark your hair is now, what color is already on it and what shade you want next.

Level

How light or dark your hair is.

Tone

The shade within that level, such as gold, copper, neutral or ash.

02

Highlights: Add Lighter Pieces

Highlights make selected sections lighter while leaving other hair darker. The contrast between those areas can create dimension.

Dimension

Light and dark sitting next to each other so the color does not look like one flat shade.

Placement

Lighter pieces around the face create a different effect from brightness distributed through the entire style.

03

Balayage: Create a Softer Blend

Balayage is a placement technique used to create a softer transition between darker and lighter areas of the hair.

Softer Placement

More depth can remain near the roots while brightness is placed through selected lengths and ends.

Your Starting Hair Matters

The amount of brightness possible depends on your starting shade, previous color and hair condition.

04

Gray Coverage: Blend or Cover Visible Gray

Gray coverage can be planned around the amount of gray you have, the shade you want and how you prefer the color to look as your hair grows.

Coverage Goal

Tell us whether your priority is stronger coverage, softer blending or refreshing an existing shade.

Maintenance

Your natural growth and preferred finished look help determine the color plan.

Hair Color Basics

Six color words that make the process easier to understand.

These are common salon terms. Knowing what they mean can make it easier to explain the result you want and understand why one color plan may be different from another.

Level

How light or dark the hair is. Moving from dark brown to light brown means changing the level.

Tone

The shade you see inside the level. Warm tone can look gold or copper. Cooler tone can look less warm.

Dimension

A mix of light and dark. Highlights can create dimension because not every piece of hair is the same shade.

Lift

How much lighter the hair becomes. More lift can expose more of the hair's underlying warmth.

Underlying Pigment

Warm red, orange or yellow tones can become more visible as hair gets lighter.

Porosity

Hair that has already been lightened or chemically treated can respond differently from untreated hair.

Why Your Starting Hair Matters

The same color plan can act differently on different hair.

Your starting shade, old color, previous lightening and hair condition all affect the plan. Tell your stylist what has been done to your hair, even if it happened months ago.

This matters most when you want a major change. Hair that already contains permanent color may not lighten in the same way as hair that has never been colored.

  • 01
    Your Starting Level

Darker hair has farther to travel to become very light hair. That can change the steps needed to reach the desired result.

  • 02
    Your Color History

Tell us about salon color, home color, bleach, lightener and anything used to make the hair darker or lighter.

  • 03
    Your Hair Condition

Previously lightened or dry areas can react differently from stronger hair.

  • 04
    Other Chemical Services

Perms and straightening treatments matter too. Tell your stylist about them before a major color change.

Lightener, Lift & Toner

Lightener makes hair brighter. Toner changes the shade you see.

These are different jobs. Lightener helps remove pigment so hair can become lighter. Toner is used to adjust the visible tone after enough lightening has happened.

A toner cannot perform all of the lightening required for a much brighter result.

  • 01
    Lightener

Used when the goal is to make hair lighter. As hair lightens, underlying warm pigment can become easier to see.

  • 02
    Lift

The amount of lightening that happens. Your starting hair and color history affect how much lift is realistic.

  • 03
    Toner

Helps refine the visible tone after lightening. The finish may be warmer, cooler or more neutral depending on the plan.

Hair Color Consultation

Five things to tell us before your color service.

You do not need to know the formula. Tell us what you have now, what has been done before and what you want the hair to look like.

1. Show the Result You Want

Bring one or two clear photos. Point to the brightness, shade, placement or blend you like.

2. Tell Us Your Color History

Share salon color, home color, bleach, lightener and any darker color you have used.

3. Tell Us About Other Treatments

Perms, straightening and other chemical services can matter when planning color.

4. Tell Us How Much Upkeep You Want

Some looks need more frequent refreshing. Others can be planned with a softer grow out.

5. Tell Us What Matters Most

Maybe you care most about brightness, warmth, gray coverage, a soft blend or keeping your hair easy to maintain.

Plain Words Are Fine

You can say, “I want this lighter,” “I want less orange,” or “I want the roots to look softer.” We can talk through the salon terminology after.

Hair Color Time & Price

Why two color appointments can take different amounts of time.

Hair color is not one fixed job. The work changes with the hair in the chair. These are some of the biggest things that can change the plan, time and price.

Hair Length and Thickness

More hair can mean more sectioning, more product and more time.

Starting Shade

A small shade change is different from trying to move several levels lighter.

Previous Color

Old permanent color or previous lightening can make the next step more complex.

How Much Hair Is Changing

A few lighter pieces is a different job from changing color through a large part of the hair.

Hair Color Questions

Hair color, highlights and balayage in Sacramento.

These answers explain the basics. Your own starting hair still needs to be evaluated before anyone can promise an exact result, time or price.

How much do hair color and highlights cost?

Price depends on the service, hair length, thickness, starting color, previous color and how much work is needed to reach the goal. Call (916) 383-2570 and describe your hair and the result you want.

Do you offer gray coverage in Sacramento?

Yes. Silver Star Salon provides hair color services that can include gray coverage. The color plan depends on your current shade, amount of gray and the finished result you want.

Can I get highlights if my hair is already dyed?

Possibly. Previous dye can change how evenly the hair lightens and which shades are realistic. Tell your stylist what you used, including home color.

What is the difference between highlights and balayage?

Highlights lighten selected sections of hair. Balayage refers to a placement technique that can create a softer transition between darker and lighter areas. The right option depends on the result you want.

Why does warm color show when hair gets lighter?

Hair has underlying warm pigment. Red, orange or yellow can become easier to see during lightening. The starting level affects which warm tones may appear.

What does toner do?

Toner adjusts the visible tone after lightening. It can help create a warmer, cooler or more neutral finish. It does not replace the lightening required to make dark hair substantially brighter.

Can you match a reference photo exactly?

A photo is a guide rather than a guarantee. Your starting shade, previous color, hair condition and the lighting in the photo can affect what is realistic. Tell us which parts of the photo matter most to you.

Can a big color change happen in one visit?

Sometimes, but not always. A large change can require more than one step or visit. The plan depends on your starting hair, previous color and current condition.

How often will I need to refresh my color?

It depends on the service, hair growth, fading and how you prefer the color to look as it grows. Tell your stylist how much maintenance you want before choosing the plan.
